Learning about Pay at Work: A Labour Process Approach to Pay Transparency

Using a labour process approach, this article examines how workers in three factories China learnt about the workplace-level pay systems governing their employment relationships. By outlining processes through which at work, sheds light on workers, faced with perplexing variable system and managerial control over disclosure, can overcome pathways towards ignorance ultimately challenge communication regime. It is shown that transparency, rather than being merely an outcome of practices to improve employee motivation organisational performance, dynamic contested social interactions between management labour.
